My favorite picks: Fashion Week Summer/Resort 2016 – India

Resort Fashion Week went by in a blur. It was full of pastels and fresh colours. There were a lot of off shoulder styles and a lot of sneakers!

My hands down favorite collection of the season was that of Rahul Mishra. He was the winner in my books. His collection was fresh, preppy, fun and most importantly, very wearable. It was like a breath of fresh air.

I am in love with Anushree Reddy‘s collection! It is amazing how she manages to make each collection so unique while staying true to her basic style, which is feminine, delicate and elegant.

Being an art lover and art critic, I find myself mesmerized by Payal Khnadwala‘s collection. The play of colours and layers have a Contemporary Urban Indian feel to them which I just loved. This is my favorite street wear collection.

Finally, I am Design had an interesting play of detailing combined with Indian handlooms which struck me.

There are so many, so many other collections for the season, but these are my favorites and I’m swooning over them ❤ All in all, that was one exciting season that went by. Do let me know your favorites in the comments below.

Get the look: Priyanka Chopra in Emmy

It’s a routine affair to get inspired by celeb street style and everyday casuals. So this time I picked Priyanka Chopra’s look from her photoshoot for Emmy magazine. Easy to pull off and chic. Anyone can rock this look.

I like how she combines the maxi skirt with a black and white jacket. I love the skirt’s colour. So, here is how you can get her look at a fraction of the price. These are my picks that you can flaunt on a day out on the Indian streets.

Find a black and white jacket, like this one from ITI, that suits you taste:

Then pick that beautiful flared maxi skirt. This one is from Cation:

Now buy a black crop top of your choice. Here is one from Faballey:

Find a pair of cute black peep toes to finish the look. Here is a pair from Cobblerz:

And, you are all set to go! Love ya’ll…

Don’t throw those out of trend clothes yet!

Fashion has invented and re-invented itself over and over until it has reached that peak where everything is just pristine and perfect. There aren’t any major new or innovative trends happening anymore. It’s now all about remembering the bygone era and getting inspired from the past.

On the other hand, it is the age of DIY. Turn that worn out denim into distressed jeans. Turn your man’s old shirt into a shirt dress. And these are just a few low end DIYs.

In such an exciting time for fashion, don’t be hasty to toss your old clothes away. Because what is out of trend today could be back in trend tomorrow. Even better, you could turn it into something entirely different and beautiful. Also, you would have a heirloom to pass on to you children that they love!

Here is a live example of what I mean. I owned a pair of beautiful palazzo pants that I just didn’t have the heart to toss out. I saved it against all odds and my mother’s constant nagging to get rid of it. I myself wasn’t sure if I would ever wear it again. But, guess what? Palazzos are very much in trend again. To my mom’s surprise I wear them every other day and I get to say, “I told you so!”. My friends are envious of them and ask me where I bought them. I know that they will never find the same pair of pants anywhere again.

You don’t want to save them all and create an overloaded wardrobe. Instead, save your favorite masterpieces that you are sure to never have a chance to find again. You or your daughter would feel proud to be flaunting it after a decade when they are seen as trendy once again.

Post baby: Style Update

Have you ever wondered what it’s going to be like after having a baby? You might read every motherhood book out there and yet never know what it really feels like until you experience it. Because, let’s just face it, each baby is different. No two babies are the same. No baby follows textbook rules. Her baby sleeps through the night, while my baby wakes up crying every one hour. Cry it out methods work for her baby and they don’t work for mine. Let me give you a suggestion, follow your heart and just go with the flow without fretting too much.

Now, how does life change for the fashionista? This can be quite a predictable experience that all  mommies can resonate with, and for all you mommies to be, here are some pointers 😉

Observation 1: Chuck those danglers!

The most obvious – the long hanging earrings. They got to go or you risk having your earring tear up you ear (Ouch!) Babies love dangling objects. Babies love shiny objects. And guess what? Your earrings are a combination of both! So expect your baby to grab onto your earrings before you put them on.

Fix: Choose to accessorize with bracelets and ankle chains instead.

Observation 2: The mommy knot

Most people think that new mommies do up their hair in a knot to be hassle free. While that is partly true, the real reason behind it is that they want to avoid those ouchilicious, tiny, baby hands from grabbing onto their tresses and stressing them in the process. Let me tell you, if you always wanted to try that short haircut look, now is the time to go for it!

Fix: Do up you hair in easy updos. For example, do up a braided knot to look chic while being functional.

Her hair and her lips – Two thumbs up!

Observation 3: Those luminous lips

This one usually creeps up unexpectedly on new mommies.

You line those lips with perfection and carefully fill in that hot new shade of vivid red. Once you are all set to step out, you hold up your baby and swipe! Just like that, the red is everywhere. On your chin, your cheeks, those baby hands and baby face and in the worst case, all over your clothes. You look like you stepped out of a zombie show.

Fix: Avoid glosses and go for non-transferable matte lipsticks.

Observation 4: Heels?

I’m not talking about those super mommies who expertly trod on those needles while carrying a baby on their hips.

I’m talking about mommies like me who feel like their body is about to collapse under their baby’s weight. Heels are the last thing on my mind in such a situation.

Fix: If you have to, wear block heels, kitten heels or wedges.

Observation 5: Bags are for diapers

Gone are the days when I absolutely couldn’t do without that lip gloss, water bottle, matching shades, kleenex, comb, face wash, moisturizer, lip balm, hand sanitizer and cardigan stuffed into that large bag. All I need now is a diaper bag. Stuff my mobile and a lip balm into a pocket in the diaper bag and I’m done.

Fix: Carry a cross body bag for comfort, functionality and style!

Observation 5: Long talons

I think we tend to cut our nails the moment we hold our new born baby in our arms and realize how soft and tiny they are.

Fix: If you are a long nails fanatic who just can’t do without, go for shorter and rounded nails.

Observation 6: Conscious much?

Are you are the kind of person who is conscious about how her hair looks or whether your shirt is creased in social situations? Well, expect all of that to change. When you are a mom, such things don’t matter as much as your baby’s smile.

Fix: Wear non crease, easy maintenance fabrics like and do your hair in an easy style that can be re-done in a moment.

Those were just my observations, mommies. What all style changes have you experienced after having a baby? Do let me know in the comments below. Lots of love to you all.

I am personally in love with each piece above. I think I’ll be buying the cold shouldered top by Femella. It is totally me. I hope you can find your pick too. Do let me know which one you liked the best!

Get the look: Kangana Ranaut in Gucci

If you like to look perfectly put together at work, this look is for you. Kangana Ranaut shows us how to make your boring office wear look chic and classy.

The look is completely put together right from the sunglasses to the sleek black pumps. I loved the cute bow tie shirt.

I have picked out all the pieces that make up this outfit to make it affordable and within your reach. Look like a million bucks at work and make your colleagues’ jaws drop in awe.

The first step is to find those well fitted trousers. Check out these trousers by Vero Moda:

And blazer by Globus:

Blue shirt by Lemon Chillo:

It is difficult to find a tie neck shirt that is as cute as Kangana’s. So here is a tip. Wear a blue shirt like this one by Van Heusen:

And add a plain silk/cotton scarf in the same shade as the shirt and tie it under the collar with a big bow in the front.

Sleek black pumps by Steve Madden:

Don’t leave the black bag, watch and belt behind:

Finally don’t step out without those black wayfarers:

Kangana Ranaut

Make sure that you complete the look by styling your hair and make up appropriately a la Kangana. I hope that you rock this look. Enjoy!

All about those shoulders

The biggest comeback trend for the season is to show off those shoulders. Whether it is by wearing off shoulder tops or cut out shoulder tops aka cold shoulder tops.

I remember a time long ago I tried buying closed necked tops and all I could find were off shoulder tops in some stores. It was a time when the off shoulder trend was so overdone it used to pour out of even the tiniest little shop.  Ugh…. let’s just hope that it doesn’t get to that. But, yes, off shoulders is rocking the scene once again. It’s not something new or groundbreaking, but a lovely comeback.

Sonam Kapoor in Ulyana Sergeenko

Bollywood celebrities are all lining up to catch on to the trend one after the other. Sonam Kapoor is once again the one to flaunt the look on multiple occasions

Deepika Padukone, Kangana Ranaur, Alia Bhatt, Shraddha Kapoor have all tried their hand at the trend. Deepika Padukone was spotted wearing a white off shoulder midi length dress. The length of the sleeves and shoes are what ruin her look for me.

The style has also made it’s way onto the Indian runways giving it that desi allure.

Tamannah Bhatia was spotted wearing Anushree Reddy’s lehenga with an off shoulder blouse. Must say, the lehenga looks fab. However, Tamannah’s styling could have added so much more to the outfit. Her hair and make-up leave much to be desired.

Tamannah Bhatia in Anushree Reddy

Shraddha Kapoor wore a cut out shoulder white blouse with a fuschia maxi length skirt. She looks sweet and the look works well for her. I am a little inclined towards the cut out shoulder style I must admit.

Shraddha Kapoor in a cold shoulder blouse.

Reality Check:

Of course off shoulder looks great, but, how many of you are willing to sport one yourself? How would you style it, and how to find a style that you feel comfortable in?

tip number 1

If you are uncomfortable with wearing a top that is completely off the shoulder, there is the option of the cold shoulder top. It shows a fabulous slice of your shoulder. There are varying styles to suit your every need. That’s the best part about this trend.

tip number 2

Hold your shoulders back. Posture is everything for this style. Any slouching would make the dress droop making it unappealing, or worse cause a wardrobe malfunction.

tip number 3

Keep the accessories minimalistic. It’s what will make the style look today rather than back then.

tip number 4

Wear off shoulder blouses to add oomph to any Indian wear instantly.

tip number 5

Fit is everything for this style. Even a great posture won’t help a bad fit. It is easily prone to wardrobe malfunction. The reason that all those celebrities flaunt off shoulder tops with absolute confidence is because of the garment’s quality. So make sure you invest in a good quality, well fitted off shoulders top (even better if you can try it on before buying).

So, while off shoulders is totally hot, it might not always be the most feasible for Indian streets. It’s sister style – the cut out shoulder is your best bet for Indian streets.

Until next time.

Rebuilding your wardrobe

Are you 30 and still stuck with your college days wardrobe? You know it, your friends know it. It’s time to rebuild your wardrobe. We keep evolving as we age and we are not the same as we were yesterday. Our experiences keep adding up, shaping and moulding us constantly. In other words, it’s not what they show in the movies. A person is not all black or all white. We are each a different shade of grey.

You might have been a rebelling youngster in college. Wearing black all the time! Or you might have been a frolicking young girl. Wearing those girly dresses and lacy tops.

What are you today? I’m sure there has been a lot of change in your life and your personality. You might still be a rebelling youngster at heart, but you also might be a dedicated entrepreneur, or maybe a mother, or both! You might still love those girly dresses, but perhaps you want to make a more serious impression on the world?

8354511872_68c151c943_o (1)

Maybe you have gotten into the rut of buying the same kind of clothes from your college days over and over again, merely out of habit. And maybe now is the time to rebuild your wardrobe to meet your current tastes and needs.

Rebuilding doesn’t have to be a chore. Let’s make it simple:

You don’t have to compromise on your original style

It’s not about completely chucking your old style, but about tweaking it. If you love your black leather jackets, keep them, but change the style of the leather jacket. If you are used to teaming the black jacket with all black, it’s now time to wear it with white!

Look within

Try to picture yourself from the point of view of the person in front of you. What do you see? Do you like what you see? What is it that you want to see?

Answer these questions to yourself and think deeply about the image that you want to portray to the world. It will tell you a lot about how you want to change your wardrobe.

Go for that dream outfit

If you have been wanting to try a certain style in a long long time but never got around to doing it, now is the time. Do it. Don’t be afraid.

Think about your current lifestyle

What is your current lifestyle like as opposed to your college days?

Surely there have been big changes. Dress to suit your current lifestyle. Are whites suitable for you or do you travel so much that black makes more sense?

When there are big changes in your life, get a feel of them. Rebuilding our wardrobe gives us a certain freshness to our mind that is unparalleled.

Shopping: Picking out an outfit

I buy that awesome top that was the center of attraction at the store.

“It’s different from what I usually wear…but it’s so beautiful. Hm. That’s okay, I can pull it off. The last of my savings will be spent on this masterpiece. Yay! I am super excited to wear it”.

“It’s my friend’s birthday party and I am so wearing my new top.”

I put it on, “Crap, this skirt doesn’t go with it. I thought that it would. Dang. It doesn’t go with this skirt either. Uh oh.”

I pull off the shirt and grab my old, tested and tried outfit and slip into it with ease. I hop off to the party feeling good and guilty all at the same time.

As for the top, it gets gradually shoved to the back of my closet and is eventually forgotten.

Is it just me that had such an experience? This is what happens when I try to go out of my way to try something new. Experiment is the word. More like a failed experiment.

So, what I have gathered with all those years of experimenting and all those forgotten masterpieces lying in my closet is this – buy with an outfit in your mind. When you are buying a new top, make a mental note of what bottom you are going to wear with it. Also, think of the accessories, jewellery and shoes that will go with it. Because if you don’t do this, most probably you will end up buying everything to go with that top later when you realize that you don’t have anything that goes.

The above is just one thing that goes awry while shopping. Here are some tips to help you shop and avoid further mishaps and wastage of money.

tip number 1: Buy complete outfits

Try to buy whole outfits and not single pieces when you decide to deviate from your usual style. (Unless it’s just another top that you will wear over your old pair of denims). Because chances are that your current clothes won’t go with this new style that you are buying.

tip number 2 – Keep images of your outfits on your mobile:

Keep your pieces of clothing at the back of your mind while shopping. Better yet, keep images of your outfits on your mobile for your shopping trip. This way you can avoid buying duplicates or complete mismatches.

tip number 3 – Carry your garment to the store:

If you are looking for something to match to an existing piece that you have, always carry it with you to the store and wear it while trying on the new top/ bottom that you are about to buy. This will give you an instant picture of how the top will fare whether or not it’s beautiful by itself.

tip number 4 – Take a picture in the trial room:

When you try on an outfit, always take a long shot picture on your mobile. Pictures speak a lot and can give you a clear image of how you look from afar. Frumpy or sleek, pictures show it all. If you don’t have anyone to take a pic, just use the trial room mirrors to get a long shot yourself.

Following these tips have really made me a savvy shopper. I hope they help you as much as they have helped me. That’s all for now. Catch you all later!

The meaning of fashion in a predominantly male world

My mind is whirring with thoughts and I have to get them out fast. So, have you ever wondered why we girls have to look like pin-up girls, while guys don’t?

There is a perception that the skimpier, the better. I’ve seen girls in freezing cold flaunting thigh high skirts. Why is it so? And who has made it so?

We don’t even see a man flaunting his muscles during the summers, let alone winters. Does a man have to bare his shoulders to look sexy, or wear thigh grazing bottoms on a date? Or, do you see men wanting to wear the shortest shorts possible? Nope. That’s just for the women.

A woman has to get a transforming make over, where she finally reveals her womanly curves, to gain popularity. Pop culture had made sure of that. Have you ever seen a guy undergoing a makeover to get popular? Haha – that would be laughed upon. A man’s makeover merely involves getting a new hairstyle.

For decades women’s fashion has all been about impressing the opposite sex. All about showing your curves and bearing your skin.Bikinis are hot. Hot pants look cool.A girl in slacks and baggy tops is an eyesore. Nobody wants to date her. Even though the timid youngster doesn’t realize it, this world is predominantly male. Fashion too revolves around what men want to see.

Models and fashion celebs are aware of it even though they don’t always let it on. Don’t you think it’s about time that we change this ideology. You don’t have to show cleavage, you don’t have to bare your shoulders nor do you have to wear short skirts to a winter date. We are getting there, but are not quite there yet. The celebrities too wear an occasional tuxedo to create a buzz and then get back to their routine of thigh high slits and plunging necklines. Because it is what the masses want to see.

In the meanwhile, I will wear what I like to wear. I will cover up if that’s what I like or maybe I won’t. Either way, what I want to say is that your style should not be about society’s pre-defined notions. It should be about what you feel and how you feel. Here’s hoping that you feel the same. Until later folks.
